Do you have what it takes?

Uncategorized

Hat League has been one of GUPA’s great successes through the years.  It mixes up all the players, creates even, balanced teams which makes for excellent games every week, and creates a sense of community throughout the GUPA ranks.  It’s one way that our league has quite a unique atmosphere, and camaraderie between the teams.

GUPA would like to officially invite applicants for our Indoor III season Hat Leagues.  We are looking for 16 captains, 8 for Tuesday night rec.  8 for Wednesday night competitive.

Captaining duties:
 a) Being present for draft (Date TBD).
 b) Coordinating team weekly for games (players can find their schedule on leaguerunner, but an email for motivation or a change in strategy never hurts)
 c) Providing a positive atmosphere for players to get to know each other
Application should say:
1)Name
2)Playing experience (in GUPA and otherwise)
3)Any captaining experience (teams, not boats)
4)50 words or less, why you’d make a great captain
5)If you could be any animal, what would it be?

Send this info via email to registration@gupa.ca ASAP, and thanks for being a captain!

Open II for Less

Uncategorized

Who doesn’t like running their tail off at 11pm?  You get  some great exercise, and because you can’t get to sleep until 3am, you can get some work done, or better yet, get to play some Contra on your NES.  Well, the city has admitted that some indoor field times are better than others, and have given us discounted pricing for our off-peak times.  GUPA is passing these savings directly to the players, which means that the Indoor Open II league, is now just $50/person for the season, instead of $80.

Now you can be an insomniac every Thursday night knowing you just saved some cash that you can now use for more NES cartridges!

The info:  Thursday at Centennial Dome – December 15th to February 9th.  48 player limit (Paid Fees will secure your spot to ensure commitment)  Games played at either 10pm or 11pm.

Annual General Meeting/End of Season Party/Disc Drive!

Uncategorized

The AGM is the best opportunity ALL YEAR to get the inside scoop on all that Gupa does and is.  Next Tuesday, September, 27th, at 7pm, you’ll get to meet the GUPA board, and have your say in the future of the league.  We will be nominating and electing new board members, discussing what the coming year has in store, and gathering feedback to make GUPA even more awesome than it already is.

Where:  E-Bar (Above the Bookshelf Cafe downtown)

When:  7pm (AGM)  8:00pm (End of Season Party)

Following the AGM will be the End of Season Party for Recreational leagues, official start time will be 8:00, and awards will be handed out.  This party will also include GUPA’s first ever DISC Drive for Right to Play.  We will be collecting all your used Discs to donate to Right to Play, who have specifically requested Ultimate discs from us to spread the good news of Ultimate to all corners of the globe!  For every disc that you bring in, GUPA will match it, with a brand new disc to give Right to Play, which means your disc donation doubles!!!

MUD at Nationals, one of Canada’s Best.

Uncategorized

We at GUPA are extremely proud to announce the results from Nationals this past weekend.  Our partner team, MUD, placed 7th in the country.  Here is the report from Ottawa:

MuD entered the Canadian Ultimate Championships seeded #9 out of 16 teams.  The first day was started against the #1 seed from Montreal – Odyssee.  Following this we played Hard (#8) out of Montreal (a team MuD saw 2 weeks earlier at Mixed Up and went 1-1 against in that tournament) and Havoc (#16) out of St. John.  MuD finished day one with a record of 2-1, allowing us to move into the power pools.

Day 2 put us up against 3 Ontario teams.  Our first game was against Prodigy (#13) followed by games against Train Wreck (#4) and Union (#5).  We managed to beat Prodigy, securing a spot in the quaterfinals on Saturday.

Saturday put us up against Team Fisher Price (#2) from Vancouver.  This was one of our best games of the tournament and ended with a loss of 15-11.  Following this loss we played Train Wreck for a second time.  After a slow start, we were unable to come back in the second half and lost 15-9.  This lead us to play Spawn (#7) for 7th place.  Thanks to our large roster, we had plenty of energy and enthusiasm to defeat Spawn in our final game of the season.  Thanks to everyone who showed their support throughout this touring season.

Nationals Roster:

Back Row: Nate Alcock, Tim Likely, Cam Bruggeman, Reilly Coombs, Jamie Galloway, Everett Walls, Michelle Waechter, Matt Havercroft, Emily Havercroft, Carl Hawkins, Andy Kubinec, Dayna Horst, Wayne Root, Colleen Le Marquand, Luke Coombs, Oliver Veit, Danielle Visschedyk, Heather Neary, Ivan Yuen, Lisa Packman, Aline Portwine, Bryanne Root, Christa Connolly, Tanda Duguay.  Missing: Jenn Reesor.

MUD: The Road to Nationals

Uncategorized

GUPA is proud to announce that our partner touring team, MUD, has placed 3rd at Regionals, and is well on their way to Canada’s highest level of play, Nationals.   They play in Ottawa this weekend at Mixed Up in order to seed against the Quebec teams for Nationals.  Nationals will be back in Ottawa on August 11-14.  Show your support for GUPA’s best by getting a GUPA/MUD water bottle (sold as a fundraiser for the team).  If you see a member of MUD, give them a hearty pat on the butt to show them we’re behind them.
